live in washington but met chris 26 years ago at hastings law school, two blocks from here. we were in the same section in the same study group. when we finished law school we both went to the east coast to work for large law firms. over the years we stayed in close touch. when chris was back from over seas we were frequent tennis partners and would get together for dinners and other events in washington. over the years our families became friends as well. it's been such a pleasure to come to know them and chris's many friends in washington and to watch his career unfold. we met on the first day of school. i sat down in our civil procedure class next to a person who turned out to be named chris highland. shortly thereafter chris stevens sat down next to me. the three of us went to lunch afterwards and became friends from that day forward. chris never tried to be someone special but he was someone special. when we were at hastings his charm and wit were on display from the start. in class he was very articulate and seemed as later in life always very poised and well spoken and at eas

seeing is that the republican establishment in washington and the establishments wherever they exist in the country, they took a shock. they are somewhat concussed. however, the base itself has been shocked and is somewhat concussed. and i think sometimes at moments of shock you can look at yourself and you can say there are ways i need change. so i actually consider this promising in some ways. it can move forward things in a good way. i think the tea party is going to have to look at itself. it's been so helpful to the republican party in the past. it saved it by not going third party in 2010, helping the republicans sweep the house. but the tea party style of rage is not one nawins over converts and makes-- that wins over converts and makes people lean towards them and say, "i want to listen to you." i think a friendly persuasion has to begin now from the republican party to people of the united states. >> schieffer: david? >> let's go back to basics. this is a race republicans should have won. they thought they were going to win it. they thought they'd take back the senate. i thi

and washington. i would like him and others around him look at it and look at things like jim crow and take stock of what his legacy will be. barack obama's first administration was a bit of confusion for many of us in the fight against the war on drugs. i spoke to 1/5 person who said i am not a drug czar. that comes from the wrong mindset. don't call it a drug war because we do not think that is a war against zero people. i thought, great, there is a new sheriff in town. the obama administration and whether it is because of them or because of washington, and i am probably inclined to think it is more the latter, they ended up being not very effective or changing the war on drugs other than changing the language. my fear with that, if you're going to conduct the war, do not conduct it on another name. i am troubled by the way the first term did not manifest serious and meaningful reform in this. but i am hopeful that a new term with the right pressure and with the right sense from this week's -- several victories in several states against the drug war that maybe washington and maybe the obama adm
